Layers: Unfolding the Stories of Chester County Quilts #1 February 27, 2009 through August 1, 2009 Come and see some of the community’s many quilts documented by the historical society and numerous community volunteers. Read some of the stories they tell and find out what people all over the county have been creating for the past 200 years. Programs: In conjunction with Layers: Unfolding the Stories of Chester County Quilts, Velda Newman, an internationally known quilt artist from Northern California, will lecture about inspiration and evolution on June 3, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.. Through looking at quilts she brings with her as well as slides, Velda show how she started quilting and how she works now. She will share what she has learned and the obstacles she has encountered throughout her 20+ year creative journey. Her intention is to encourage by example. Known for her large scale, mostly organic designs, Velda's work has appeared in many national and international exhibitions and has been featured in over 30 publications. Using nature as an endless source of beauty and inspiration, learn how to get rid of "flat" appliqué. Students will learn to create texture and form using machine techniques. The class will go beyond machine techniques and introduce the use of alternative mediums such and paint, ink and colored pencil. Learn the pros and cons of lots of different mediums and their practical (and not so practical!) application. Class will run from 9 am to 5 pm each day and cots 4100 for the two days. Pre-registration is necessary.

Come explore the oldest section of West Chester - from its beginning as the crossroads at “The Turk’s Head” to its role today as the county seat. All tours will begin at the Chester County Historical Society where you can sign up for themed walks before the kick-off ceremonies, and return there for refreshments after your walk.
