Rachel Harris, One Woman over the Line

DATE CHANGE: Friday, February 19, 2010

West Chester Dance Works in collaboration with the Chester County Historical Society will present excerpts from the multimedia production “Rachel Harris – One Woman Over the Line”. The performance presents the true story of Rachel Harris, a runaway slave and her search for freedom and dignity. Rachel’s story illustrates how during a controversial time in American history, many people of varying backgrounds took risks and contributed to the pursuit of freedom.

This project brings history to life in a regionally significant story in which all people can relate. Exposure to the art of dance is intertwined with projected historical images that enrich and engage the imagination of audiences as they are drawn into the pages of that time gone by. Rachel’s story will encourage the development of conscience and character as we applaud those people of courage who in standing up for one’s beliefs, stepped out on behalf of another.

This performance is part of the Roots of American Music Series presented free to the public by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Time: 7:00 p.m.

The Working Path - lecture by Quilt Artist Sue Benner

April 14, 2010

The title, THE WORKING PATH, refers to exploring the connection between concept and process; Sue walks down a creative path developing her ideas and techniques. She shows detailed photos revealing her working process including surface design, fusing, and stitching. Construction methods of several quilt series are covered with step-by-step images, illustrating her layering techniques. The development of these methods has contributed to her experimentation in composition.

Sue is an innovator in her field, creating original dyed and painted fabrics which she combines with recycled textiles to form fields of structured pattern, vivid beauty, and riotous variation. Sue’s artwork is in many private, corporate, and institutional collections. She also lectures and teaches workshops nationally and internationally in the fields of surface design, textile collage, fused quilt construction, and artistic inspiration.

These techniques and ideas that Sue teaches here are the real basis for all her work. The resulting quilts can then be quilted in the class.

A supply list will be mailed in March to those registered.

Time: 9 a.m.- 4 pm.

Admission: $125; $100 for CCHS members. Pre-registration required; no refunds. Call 610-692-4800.
